Meet Hattie, a former corporate suit-wearing, cubical-sitting woman-turned-risk-taker. I found Hattie through an unexpected oyster search on Instagram as I began building my website. I admired her adventure, the color and optimism in her message, and most of all, her product! A handmade, gold-plated oyster shell relaxes lightly on my wrist as I type. Every time I look down, I am reminded of the passion behind my own project. There's a certain shimmer to her energy, and I had to know more about it. After all, she is making "jewelry for mermaids." Here is Hattie's story, the woman behind Sea Dipped.
How did you start getting into jewelry making, and what made you quit your day job to do it?
Hattie: I grew up bringing a bucket of sand and shells home from the beach and creating jewelry with them (not all of them were as pretty - ask my family). I was looking for a change and took a quote a little too seriously: "If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life," and I went for it. I thought, a girl covered in sand and obsessed with the ocean could help others feel the same way, and make a difference at the same time. I started Sea Dipped with the notion that a portion of every sale will help our seas, so that's why each Sea Dipped piece sold saves 10 baby sea turtles!
Your jewelry features sea shells. Why do shells hold special meaning to you?
Hattie: My favorite childhood memories are walking down the beach looking for shells and sharks teeth with my Mom, Dad, and Brother. I've always had a fascination with shells... I love how each shell has its own characteristics and tells its own story. I'm my happiest on the beach - especially exploring for shells.
How do you source your little oyster shells?
Hattie: I have my secret spots :)
What do you like most about your business and do you have any advice for future entrepreneurs?
Hattie: I love the look on peoples' faces when they try on my pieces, and being able to stand beside innovative organizations that protect our seas! My advice for future entrepreneurs is to jump in and to not be afraid to take a risk. Work with passion, give back, and help make the world a better place.
