Virginia Shaffer a Judge for "Oyster of the Year" at Maine Oyster Festival

Virginia Shaffer a Judge for "Oyster of the Year" at Maine Oyster Festival

How do you judge the "best" Maine oyster when they are all top-knotch?

Serving on the tasting panel for Maine's "Oyster of the Year" award at the Maine Oyster Festival was so fun, so hard, and so delicious. The salt of 25 different oyster farms in roughly an hour will make your hands shake!

The judging was blind and each judge was in charge of shucking their own oysters. The scoring elements were:

1) Shell shape/condition
2) Taste
3) Texture
4) Overall

As subjective as this was, there were clear standouts with remarkable flavors, brines, textures, and husbandry.

Eros Oyster took the trophy, a small farm in Robinhood Cove from Georgetown. To read more about the event, here is an article about the festival.
